Colonel David Stirling [I Love History]

Another shadowy figure from the past. The fellow at the side is is Colonel David Stirling, who invented, or founded rather, the SAS. Another Scotsman, he was known as the Phantom Major and was related to Lord Lovat, one of the first men ashore in D-Day with his commandoes.

He founded them and then they disbanded for a little while. Before being reformed and unknown about for decades. Then 1980 Iranian Embassy showed exactly who they were and what they could do.

@VirginMatchmaker I think the next commander was an Irishman- Paddy Mayne? I'm writing without notes for that name. The SAS did great things in Oman I believe. Long before I was born!

@helensusanswift there's rumours they were even in Vietnam tbh, but of course officially we never took part.

@VirginMatchmaker I thought we had people in Vietnam during and immediately after the 1939-45 war, and then the French came back and we left. That might be total mythology. I had an Australian student whose dad was in Vietnam and he told me some fascinating stuff. All anecdotal though.

@helensusanswift We probably did have people there then. But we didn't during the Vietnam War supposedly. The Aussies were there though. I'm sure there's some amazing stories!
