TRAFALGAR DAY [I Love History]

Today, 21st October 1805, Admiral Horatio Nelson defeated the combined Franco-Spanish fleet at the battle of Trafalgar.
Nelson, the one-eyed, one-armed, slight, frail, seasick admiral remains one of the great British fighting admirals after his series of naval victories.

Important victory for the uk at the time, battles like that change history 馃憤

@SW-User I believe Trafalgar ended any genuine hopes Bonaparte had for a French invasion of Britain. It is far better remembered than the battle of Camperdown, when the threat was arguably greater and Duncan defeated the Dutch.

@SW-User Various aspects of history interest me, but not the history of kings and queens - and only very little interest in political history per se

I鈥檓 certainly no expert but I do like browsing over various parts of history, English civil war seems a chaotic period, seems there were really 3 civil wars in that period but history has kind of just labelled that who era as 1 big civil war!! @helensusanswift

@SW-User I'm never sure why historians call it the English Civil War when it was fought in Scotland, Wales and Ireland as much as in England. Really weird.

Yes quite right - must have been absolute mayhem being around in those times! @helensusanswift

@SW-User Pretty horrendous I would think, with rival armies and their camp followers, plus the disease that armies carried in their wake. A bad period to live through, the 1640s and 50s.
