The Workers and the Poor just get screwed by the Coal companies. Coal miners should have no loyalty to the corporations they work for. They used you. They exploited you.
The industrialist basically stereotyped you as Hillbillies and violent drunkards and that served their interest because they could use you for Cheap Labor and the whole country would basically support it because after all you were "uncivilized"
