We’ve always been manipulated. We’re fed information to steer our beliefs and behavior and it has always worked because we either don’t think to educate ourselves or simply prefer what we’re fed to whatever reality might be. That’s been a running theme through history, and the internet’s just the latest and greatest tool. I don’t think algorithms are steered by one entity but rather multiple getting wealthy or more powerful off our hatred, outrage, and division. The masses are addicted. If we turned off the faucet, we’d be a lot less thirsty. We’re only manipulated because we let them.
