U.S. sub sinks Iranian warship off Sri Lanka, at least 80 dead

A U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday, dramatically widening Washington's pursuit of the Iranian navy.

Sri Lanka's deputy foreign minister said at least 80 people were killed in the attack on the frigate IRIS Dena, which was heading back to Iranfrom an eastern Indian port.

"An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters," Hegseth said at the Pentagon. "Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death".

The Iranian vessel had taken part in a naval exercise held in the Bay of Bengal from February 18 to 25, according to the drill's website.

Sri Lanka said it had launched a search-and-rescue operation to locate survivors after receiving a distress call, with 32 people rescued by its navy and treated at a hospital in the southern port city of Galle.

Sri Lankan navy spokesman Commander Buddhika Sampath said boats that reached the location observed only an oil slick, adding that the incident took place outside Sri Lankan waters but Colombo was still committed to providing support.

"We are hopeful we can rescue more people and will continue (operations) until we are sure," Sampath said.

The website of the 'Milan' multilateral naval exercise hosted by India listed an Iranian ship named 'IRINS Dena' as having taken part in the drill, which was held in the Bay of Bengal off India's eastern coast.

IRIS - or Islamic Republic of Iran Ship - is the more commonly used prefix for Iranian naval vessels, while IRINS - or Islamic Republic of Iran Naval Ship - is sometimes used.

HMS Conqueror sank ARA Belgrano (formerly USS Phoenix) in 1982. He can't even get that right.

@FreddieUK yes, sadly. Facts aren't welcome in the USA.

@SpudMuffin And 1971: During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Pakistani submarine PNS Hangor sank the Indian frigate INS Khukri.

Also, all he needed was go to the website where India had all the details of the naval exercise, but he wants to make it look like himself look good.

@Northwest oh yes, of course! 👍
This corresponds to the stated goal of neutralizing Iran's navy.

Just finished listening to Hegseth brag about it. He said "we sank an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death. The first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since WWII. Like that war when we were still in the War department, we are fighting to win."

Wouldn't be more efficient and humane, to ask them to surrender? Because their itinerary was on the web site. This was a naval exercise hosted by India and they even have a web site: www.ifrmilan26.com.

Speaking of WWII, back then it was customary for US subs to attempt to pick up survivors, maybe it's a war crime to ignore this, even Germans attempted to rescue our survivors.

In any case, Hegseth is trying to make it seem as if he commanded a top shelf stealthy operation, when in fact all we had to do was look up the web site, and did not even try to rescue survivors in violation of international law, even after the ship asked for help.

But Hegseth still has to answer for the "second" attack on a sinking "narco" vessel.

We've become what we dreaded.
