Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered an answer to a simple question about defending Taiwan that will surely go down in history - just maybe not the way she intended. When asked plainly whether the United States "would and should" commit troops to defend Taiwan if China attacked, AOC launched into what experts are already dubbing "the most sophisticated word salad of the 21st century." In full diplomatic cadence, she boldly proclaimed: "Uhm, you know, I think that this is ... such a ... you know, I think that ... this is a uhm ... this is of course a uh, a very longstanding policy of the United States, and ... I think what we are hoping for is that we want to make sure we never get to that point ... and we want to make sure that we are moving in all of our economic research and our global positions to avoid any such confrontation, and for that question to even arise." Translation, according to multiple confused interpreters in the audience: "Yes? No? Maybe? Let's think about it?" Two German diplomats were reportedly seen checking their watches, while one UNESCO delegate began drawing flowcharts to figure out if AOC was actually answering a question. One attendee later whispered, "If this is our strategic ambiguity, we might as well just go home.!" And at this rate, the only thing guaranteed to be defended by the U.S. is clarity.
