Honduras Attorney General Johel Antonio Zelaya on Monday issued an international arrest warrant for former president Juan Orlando Hernández, he said in a post on X.
Hernández was recently pardoned by President Donald Trump and released from prison, where he was serving a 45-year sentence on drug trafficking charges.
Hernández was convicted in federal court of conspiring with drug kingpins, moving massive amounts of cocaine into the United States. The case documented that millions of dollars in drug money and bribes fueled his rise in Honduran politics.
Trump claimed upon pardoning Hernández that the ex-president was framed by the Biden administration.
In his post, the attorney general of Honduras said, ” We have been lacerated by the tentacles of corruption and by the criminal networks that have deeply marked the life of our country.”
He said the warrant was intentionally being issued “on the occasion of the International Day Against Corruption,” which is commemorated Dec. 9.
