What worries me is not what Trump is trying to do but the suspicion that everyone will simply sigh with relief when his term ends. But that should just be the beginning of the process of amending your constitution to properly limit the powers of the president and to ensure that the courts are apolitical.

And that will require more willpower and cooperation in Congress than has been available for many years.

I suspect that that as has happened in many other countries the new administration will decry the behaviour of the preceding one but because the precedent is useful to them will do nothing to prevent themselves doing just the same.
@ninalanyon Dem, GOP, Dem GOP, Dem GOP and no socialism! Americans deserve credit for everything they do; but they blame others!

It hasn't reached the point yet but there are ways to push against this. One of the best ways is a general strike by workers. Bring a slowdown or halt to commerce and the money behind Trump's and his cohorts in congress begins to dry up. And it doesn't require the whole country to go on strike. 20-25% of the workforce will be enough be bring chaos to the economy, when the economy suffers the politicians in power begin to lose their grip.

@MoveAlong Great idea. If America was unionized like many european nations. Otherwise that quick reaction force will just plough through picket lines to allow the people hungry enough to want to work anyplace (and America has enough of them) to pass through..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Don't be so sure i6t can't happen in Europe. After all it has happened before. See https://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/nazi-germany/trade-unions-and-nazi-germany/
Just months after Hitler was appointed Chancellor, he took the decision to end trade unions in Nazi Germany. On May 2nd, 1933, police units occupied all trade unions headquarters and union officials and leaders were arrested. The funds that belonged to the trade unions – effectively this was workers money – were confiscated. However, Hitler had to be careful. He had only been in power for a few months and there were many members of the working class he had to deal with. If the working class movement in Germany organised itself, it would have presented the new Chancellor with a lot of major issues that would have to be dealt with. Removing trade union leaders helped this but it did not fully guarantee that the working class would ‘behave’ itself. Hitler had to offer the workers something more. Hitler announced that the German Labour Force, headed by Robert Ley, would replace all trade unions and would look after the working class. The title was chosen carefully. The new organisation was deliberately cloaked in patriotism, as it was now a German entity as was seen in its title. The working class was now a ‘labour force’. The Nazi Party did all that it could to ensure the workers felt that they were better off under the guidance of the Nazi Party via the German Labour Front.

In the UK we already have restrictions on the right to strike in the form of the Strikes_(Minimum Service Levels) Act 2023
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strikes_(Minimum_Service_Levels)_Act_2023

It or parts of it should be repealed this year but what if Reform gain power next time?

@ninalanyon I recognise it and see the trend in Europe. I just dont see it as prominent as in Americas gig economy and labor force of undocumented labor.. Although recent migration patterns in to Europe may have changed that.😷

The General is right of course. '"The red line is going to be when the president orders our military to start firing on demonstrators. That’s when all hell is going to break loose.”
retired Major General Randy Manner
However, it will be too late then. The white house will describe the demonstrators as looters or criminals to cover it And the military will be cleared and there will be fewer demonstraters next time. Rinse and repeat..The states and the courts and the Federal government are corrupted now. The media is coopted or tame. And trump single handedly turned any potential foreigh supporters against America (ie. Canada or Mexico) The time to stop this is pretty much past. Even if trump were assassinated tomorrow, he would only be replaced by Stephen Millers boy Vance, who would have the perfect excuse for a "crackdown to restore order" and its over..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman I'm astonished by the ease with which america abandoned its democracy, and even more astonished that they are telling themselves to sit on the couch and wait (has the game started yet?) because there are 'checks and balances' and besides maybe it'll be good for america and besides we can always vote them out...
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@newjaninev2 Yes. Americans were sold a bill of goods about their own superiority, which may have been partially true in the 50s and 60s, with the moon landings as a crown. But the money got in a ruined the very thing that made them great, and sedated them with a false reality. The world has been weaned off it, thank goodness for trump (and who thought I would ever say that?) And now we watch the slow motion trainwreck from a safe distance hopefully..😷

It seems like that is only a matter of time.
