I'm not sure it's a blight. I think it's an avenue towards positive change. Newsom is against gerrymandering. He signed legislation to ban it at the local level in the state.
He's said he doesn't want this fight. And made it clear it would be tit for tat. If Texas doesn't do it California doesn't do it. But he knows he's holding the cards.
I'm a Californian and we voted for an independent commission. It's popular here. So what Newsom is doing, because he believes it's necessary and just, is letting the voters decide. That's how Democracy SHOULD work. And that's important right now.
And so is not backing down and taking the fight to him. Newsom doesn't fear Trump. And he plays him like a drum.
Once people understand that this is temporary, and being done to PROTECT from gerrymandering in the future, I think they'll be all-in. This won't be a hard sell.
So I'm trying to see it as an opportunity. Moving away from the blight through the will of the people. It could have a ripple effect. I hope so. We'll see.
