There were a total of 5 American Cardinals as contenders, all of whom were considered 'long shots' at best, yet here's the Catholic Church now with an American Pope which was a decision in my view that robbed Catholicism of it's legitimacy in the real world.

@Elessar Maybe a miscalculated move. The vatican joining the US in decline...Of course I speak as an atheist..😷

@swirlie The guy hasn't lived in NA for decades, openly disapproved of both the president and the VP; being an U.S. citizen he can have a saying on U.S. politics while also being the head of the church. Also evangelicals have embedded themselves to Trumpism too much, so you can expect a lot of Christians will move away from them, and an American non-Trumpian alternativ will look appealing.
If Catholics won't expand their share in the US in the next 10 years you're free to put pineapples on my pizza

@whowasthatmaskedman It isn't joining it, that's the point. Had it been the case they'd have picked an ultraconservative cardinal also from the US. This is the exact opposite

@swirlie imagine if they elected a black or asian pope!

The 49th Pope was Black but was the only non-Caucasian Cardinal to become Pope.
