Anyone following that West Hill High School story ?

In New York, USA. An alleged hazing took a seriously dark turn when a few individuals took it upon themselves to load a van with freshmen, drive them into the woods and then threaten them with a knife and a gun.

The District Attorney had to publicly order that those responsible turn themselves in within 24 hours or face arrest and time in jail.

Why is it OR face arrest and and not AND face arrest?
Hazing. Oh well! Nothing like a dead town full of dying people!

@JimboSaturn They do it to exert fear and pain to maintain control, seniors have been hazing freshmen for decades, however this case went way too far.

That phrasing implies that some hazing is acceptable.

Is this something that happens in US universities generally? Or is a 'tradition' in just a few? Where I come from (south of England) it's the kind of behaviour that we left behind in junior high school, or earlier. You are expected to behave like a responsible person when you get to uni. not as a childish bully.

In the UK the specific offence mentioned in the post would be categorized as, at least, common assault for which one can be imprisoned for six months by a magistrate. https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/news/item/assault-offences-explained/
