Rubio Says U.S. to Decide in Days if End to War in Ukraine Is ‘Doable’

The United States will abandon efforts to end the war in Ukraine if it proves impossible to broker meaningful progress in the next several days, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said as he departed Paris on Friday a day after meeting with President Emmanuel Macron of France.

“If it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, we need to move on,” Mr. Rubio told reporters, adding that the Trump administration would decide “in a matter of days whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks.”

It was not clear from Mr. Rubio’s remarks whether he meant that the United States would merely abandon its effort to reach a 30-day cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine or abandon Washington’s commitments to Ukraine altogether.

But his remarks ratcheted up pressure on both sides to end the war and appeared intended to inject urgency into European efforts to prod Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, toward compromise.

While the United States is Russia’s chief interlocutor in the negotiations, Europe has far greater sway over Mr. Zelensky. President Trump said on Thursday that he was “not a big fan” of the Ukrainian leader.

Mr. Rubio said Mr. Trump “has spent 87 days at the highest level of this government repeatedly making efforts to bring this war to an end. We are now reaching a point when we need to decide and determine whether this is even possible or not.”

High-level talks on Thursday between American, European and Ukrainian officials were the first of their kind, intended to bring “convergence” between views of the war in Washington and European capitals. Mr. Rubio said the conversations had been constructive, but it appeared clear that Mr. Trump was losing patience.

“It is not our war. We didn’t start it,” Mr. Rubio said. “The United States has been helping Ukraine for the past three years and we want it to end, but it’s not our war.”

Mr. Rubio and Steve Witkoff, Mr. Trump’s envoy, have led the American diplomacy aimed at ending the war, which has festered for more than three years. Mr. Witkoff has met with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia multiple times and said he was trying to develop a “friendship, a relationship” with the Russian leader.

But Mr. Putin has balked, setting various conditions even for a 30-day cease-fire. The Russian bombardment of Ukraine continues.

The officials who took part in the Paris talks have agreed to meet next week in London, and Mr. Rubio indicated he might participate. He said he hoped Europeans would remain engaged in the efforts to secure a peace in Ukraine. Mr. Putin’s demands — among them that Ukraine cede territory that Russia has occupied and abandon its attempts to join NATO — have been rejected outright by Ukraine.

“I think the U.K. and France and Germany can help us move the ball on this and then get this closer to a resolution,” Mr. Rubio told reporters at Le Bourget airport as he prepared to depart. “I thought they were very helpful and constructive with their ideas.”

This was a far gone conclusion long before Trump was elected. Putin wants the old Russian territories and nothing less. Why he is so against Ukraine joining NATO.

Ukraine is no threat to him without NATO.
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer Not even with NATO, as NATO is only defensive. If Putin stays within his borders, there is no problemen.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy you're forgetting that the EU is supplying Ukraine. In fact Sweden dumped 1.6 billion of their reserves recently and over 80 billion since the war has started.

Sweden is apart of NATO now.
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer I don't forget that. In my opinion Your Felon in Chief is making NATO redundant, so the EU will take over that role for her member states. In the EU is already a clause like art. 5 of the NATO treaty.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy Not redundant just less effective. A number of other factors are involved. The addition of Finland being another. And don't forget Canada is apart of NATO.

Please consider NATO and other EU nations separately as well. While Poland is apart of NATO they as well are supplying Ukraine separately. A few other factors are not obvious either.

@DeWayfarer With the largest member being disloyal, NATO can't be trusted anymore. To me it became redundant and EU is totally right working on a swift alternative without the USA. Canada and others can connect too.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy Ever since Trump got in the USA was effectively not apart of NATO.

Trump threatened Canada and Greenland!
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer So far on the USA being a trustworthy NATO-member, nowadays.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy I don't count the USA as apart of NATO anymore!
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer Neither do I, but formally it still has a say and influence, so we better terminate NATO and invest in an viable alternative.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy Trump will not do that. He thinks the USA is above such alliances!
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer Then he can leave.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy you know how long it took to get rid of Marcos of the Philippines?

And that was a minor country! We have a dictator now!
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer That's right. But I live in the EU and don't want to depend of a mad dictator, so we should leave NATO.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy he will if he doesn't get his way! He threatened leaving NATO on his first term.
EagerDaddy · 46-50, M
@DeWayfarer One more reason not to let him get his way.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EagerDaddy this is why you folks need to step it up!
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@DeWayfarer america is once again ruled by a mad king... George III would be delighted!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@newjaninev2 I'm not proud of it.

Yet I do recognize the facts, when it hits over each and everyone's head around the world.

BTW please don't refer to the USA as America.

You insult all other North and South American countries by saying that.

And you play right into Trump's M-"A"-GA plans for all of both North and South America.

Like there's really such a thing as the Gulf of America to the whole world. 😵‍💫

Dicate is what dictators do, even to other countries.

@DeWayfarer Sweden joined after Putin invaded Ukraine. Putin is the threat that has Europe increasing its defence spending.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@22Michelle I know. Why I mentioned the previous 80 billion on the replies.
