Korean plane crash?

177 dead.
Did you watch the video? Damn scary.
And I thought landing was the fun & smooth part in a flight. Obviously NOT!
New phobia unlocked 😨

As a pilot I can tell you that landing is the hardest and therefore most dangerous part of any flight. As a student pilot you learn to control the crash as you narrow the gap between the sky and the ground at a 120 kph. Then you graduate and learn to fly bigger and faster airplanes that are going even faster when you close that gap. The art is to stop flying just as you touch the ground. Yes you can stop flying too early and too late. Both can have very bad outcomes. The problem in the video is that the aircraft wheels did not come down so the airplane landed on its belly. The belly is slippery and has no brakes so the airplane doesn't slow down as it would if it landed on its wheels. Of course big airplanes don't just use wheel brakes they also use the engines as they reverse thrust. However in a belly landing the thrust reversers are made inoperable so you just keep sliding until you stop or hit something. In this case they hit a heavy barricade and a lot of people were killed because of that design flaw. I don't know enough about the airport to know why they put the barricade there. Likely to prevent over runs into housing or a highway.

Yesss. This is the belly comment I was looking for. Haha
Thank you for explaining. I didn’t get the chance to read the whole thing and reply earlier. Glad we’ve got a pilot in the house 🫡
As a passenger, landing always feels like getting back to safety. I’ll deffo take your word for it

I saw the video.

1. The landing gear was not extended.

2. There was engine fire, and the engines seemed t be working fone.

Looks like a combination of pilot error, combined with airport/procedures error.

The pilot should not have attempted a landing without a landing gear, before (as a last resort) then airport had a chance to dose the runway with a special foam designed for thsi purpose.

@Nunki
Landing gear as in the wheels?

Yes, as in wheels were not down and the plane skidding along the runway with no wheels. The pilots would have known the wheels were not down prior to touching down, aborted and went around, with assistance from air traffic control.

I've been on a flight when the pilot tried twice, but didn't feel the conditions were good enough for a landing in Stockholm with low visibility and in the middle of a snow storm. Third attempt worked.

Aha, thanks for the clarification.
I bet you were super relieved haha. I remember this one flight where the pilot kept trying to land but the weather was so bad he couldn’t. We ended up flying in circles for ages. When he finally touched down the whole plane burst into applause

@Nunki This is pretty standard and an experienced crew handles it fine.
I don't fly often. 6 times in my life and one of them we landed on a shorter runway then we took off from, captain came over the intercom " this is your captain speaking, we will be landing momentarily. Please brace yourselves as this is a shorter runway then normal..."
Nunki · 31-35, F
Hahaha wtf. Sorry I laughed
I think I'd die of fear alone. Glad you made it safely @Justafantasy
Take off and landing are the dangerous parts of a flight
Nunki · 31-35, F
I won’t be flying until February and by then hopefully I’ll recover from this. Flying is generally very safe indeed as you say. There are a million flights every year with very few crashes. So it’s only a tiny fraction. But my mind rn is telling me what if you get unlucky 👹 haha
@HootyTheNightOwl
@Nunki You have a higher chance of winning the lottery jackpot than you have of boarding a doomed flight... and most of us don't stand a chance of winning the lottery.

@Nunki
Like the wheels might get stuck and not come out

They don't lower the landing gear as they're landing. This happens when the aircraft is flying at about 1,500 feet, and 5+ miles away from the runway, giving pilots enough time to abort the landing.

I keep thinking this could have been avoidable with a more experienced/better trained crew.
everything looks preplanned, there's some conspiracy
Nunki · 31-35, F
@Nunki google all the recent Boeing incidents in last 24 hours
Nunki · 31-35, F
Yeah. It's crazy to say the least but I'm not sure about those conspiracy theories. Seems like 2024 wants to make quite the impression before saying goodbye @mysteryespresso
Different · 31-35, M
I saw it very weird it happen once they landed
Different · 31-35, M
@Nunki crazy they probably throught they were all fine til it exploded on them all and probably had no idea it would happen.
Nunki · 31-35, F
Yeah that's possible. I wonder who the pilot was like how many years of experience he had. RIP anyway @Different
Different · 31-35, M
@Nunki gonna be a big lawsuit for everyone who died too from their familys over that one pilot but usually they have co pilots so i guess both didnt know what to do
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Completely mystified as to why they would put such a solid barricade at the end of the runway.
Hmmm right after all that impeachment palava 🤔
