@DeWayfarer The adults were mentally developmentally disabled. I think this counselor was 17 years old. I don’t know the reason why except that it was a summer job and maybe hard to get adults to take such jobs since they are working to support themselves while a 17-year old is still at home with parents.

@cherokeepatti I actually worked for summer camps. And with kids at the camp. No minor could be a worker, much less a counselor at Astro camp!

Part of my job was serving food to the kids. Later I switched to housekeeping. Now you're talking a counseling position? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I couldn't have qualified for that, as an adult, with a degree! It requires child behavioral coarses. It would be no different for mentally handicapped child or adult.

I know this as well because my sister in-law had her master's in child handicapped psychology. A master's degree. Not just a bachelors degree. And was a counselor at a developmental behavioral center.

@DeWayfarer I remember when I was a kis in the 70's, our week camp had 16 and 17 year olds that were junior counselors, this could be the same thing.

@cherokeepatti I know things are more lax in your state. Yet that is beyond ridiculous. The mentally disabled require even more help than just kids.

My sister in-law had to fight to just bring one of the kids home with her. It took months of fighting with the administration and with parental permission.

@DeWayfarer Junior counselors are older campers that are given jobs as assistants, to help the regular counselors during activities. My Dad's cousin runs a summer camp in Oregon, her youngest daughter, my third cousin, she was born one day before my 7th birthday, is her administrator, they say junior counselors are the backbone of any camp, that without them regular counselors get overwhelmed trying to keep the daily chaos reigned in.

@cherokeepatti Church camps are some of the most notorious one for abuse.

@NativePortlander1970 a temp agency called labor ready got me both jobs successively. Worked at Astro camp for over a year.

I don't remember the exact name because it was only for a couple of months!
