Congress actually met to discuss the loss of the Great American Prairie, which was quickly turning into dust under the pressure of white settlers. The meeting was cancelled because of the great clouds of dust choking the capitol, but the leadership all agreed that the Great Dust Bowl phenomenon wasn't real.
Killing the ecosystem is today's settling of the prairie.
