Senate Republicans block border security bill. Here's why.

From PBS:

A FUNDING BREAKDOWN

Total size: $118.3 billion.
That includes:

About $60 billion in military aid for Ukraine

$14.1 billion in aid for Israel

$4.83 billion in aid for the Indo-Pacific region

$10 billion in humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, among other places

$2.3 billion in refugee assistance inside the U.S.

$20.2 billion for improvements to U.S. border security

$2.72 billion for domestic uranium enrichment

New border emergency authority.
The bill sets up a new trigger based on the average number of migrant encounters. After this level is reached, most new migrants entering the country illegally, outside of legal ports of entry, will automatically be removed.

If the average number of migrants crossing is:

4,000 per day, over seven days, DHS can launch this authority.

5,000 per day, over seven days, DHS must launch this authority.

This emergency trigger turns off within two weeks of the numbers falling below 4,000 or 5,000.
$100,000,000,000 of added pork is not a "border bill".

Allowing 4 to 5 thousand illegal invaders per day is not security.
5.000 X 365 = 1,825,000 per year with no questions asked - INSANE!

Armies invade. You know, like what Putin is doing over in Ukraine.
CactusJackManson · 46-50, M
@AbbySvenz The US is sending aid to Ukraine and many other countries without being involved in hostilities involving those countries, and has historically. In fact, the Lend Lease Act had a lot to do with the isolationist sentiment within the country, owing to the belief that is was better to send supplies to the "good guys" rather than getting involved in the actual conflict. Look it up.
CactusJackManson · 46-50, M
@AbbySvenz In addition, the Lend Lease Act was not passed as a reaction the the German/Soviet invasion of Poland, it was passed after the fall of France when it appeared the Allies might lose, a development that almost certainly would have dragged the US into the war.

It’s almost like we’ve learned from past missteps 🤔

thanks for the explanation for all the libs who think trump and the republicans just decided to kill the bill so they could use it as an election year issue. it's not a border security bill in the least.

Strip out all foreign funding and have all applicants remain in Mexico.
The number of "crossings" mentioned is not just opening the border crossings and all of the INS goes out for a coffee. The ENTIRE number crossing is vetted.....fingerprinted and photographed. Some are detained and returned..........some are allowed to apply for asylum. "Crossing's" does NOT mean they stayed here. ONLY that they "crossed" the border and then one of 3 things happened. This is why the INS calls this "border encounters". ENCOUNTERS does not mean allowed to enter.

More spin from right wing nut cases to scare the public and divide.
Ynotisay · M
@anythingoes477 And they don't seem to mention the deportation numbers where are FAR higher than under Trump. You got it right. Asylum is a completely different animal. Attaching "invader" to it just speaks to someone's lack of humanity or understanding of what that entails. I bet this dude live in Lilly White Land too.Usually how it works.
@Ynotisay You are correct about no trumper understanding 99.9% of the things they are lied to about. The cult cheered when trump forced immigrants to stay in Mexico to apply for asylum. But that action was both unconstitutional............and against federal immigration laws. If they knew the law....they'd have known that. The fact they were all for him breaking the law means they are ignorant of the law........and/or just ignorant period for wanting our laws broken. Federal Immigration laws says an immigrant MUST FIRST ENTER THE UNITED STATES...surrender to authorities......to apply for asylum,. You can't still be in Mexico to surrender to OUR authorities.

**20.2 BILLION** FOR US BORDER SECURITY. Very few Canadians may immigrate here - illegally crossing the oceans, well that will rarely occur if at all - the border with Mexico is the primary focus.

Quite frankly they can't stop them, unless they have the personnel to patrol every foot of the border every 5 minutes or so with orders to shoot, they are going to get here....... This is not a problem that is new to Texas in and before the 1960s / 70s they hunted them down and sent them back. The population of the countries have doubled or tripled so are there migrants....... Santa Ana said they were going to take Texas back and it seems they're working on it - and most of those countries south of the US border are spanish-speaking people.

Get your government to hire more personnel and patrol, patrol - one guard for every thousand feet or so. Cuz that multi-billion dollar wall Trump faked in building is a BURST.

They want more illegals. There, I simplified the OP.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@BohemianBoo Actually, it's the democrats that want more illegals, They wanted to give them voting rights since we caught them using dead people to vote.

@IM5688 You mean we caught republicans in FL (The Village) voting illegally
pdockal · 56-60, M
How is this a boarder bill ???
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Of course it failed.

Now wait six months for the Republican government to find/borrow/steal similar sums only calling it MILITARY SPENDING.

Then watch as it all magically disappears with nothing to show for it at the next public accounts hearing
pdockal · 56-60, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic

What are you blabbering about
Nobody has an issue with anybody who comes here legally and followed the protocols in place for LEGAL immigration
ILLEGAL immigration is the issue
Don't confuse the issue
The USA continues to abuse humanity and wage huge war. Nobody thinks we can influence that regime.

@Roundandroundwego maybe you should join Hamas

boudinMan · 61-69, M
@NativePortlander1970 that was then, this is now. what's your point? to continue to allow any and everyone into the country unvetted, like your brain dead leader is currently doing?
@boudinMan Maybe the authorities should be inspecting all of your devices and interviewing your daughter
boudinMan · 61-69, M
@NativePortlander1970 i assume there's a point in there somewhere, but i have no desire to decipher it.

@Patriot96 That's exactly what this bill does. S.4361 is the Border Act of 2024. You can read the full text here:
