World Press Freedom Day
Yesterday on World Press Freedom day, the UNESCO awarded its World Press Freedom prize to all Palestinian journalists covering Israel’s war on Gaza. During a ceremony in Chile, the jury’s chairperson said “As humanity, we have a huge debt to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression”.
As of May 3, 2024, CPJ’s (The Committee to Protect Journalists is an independent, nonprofit organization) preliminary investigations showed at least 97 journalists and media workers were among the more than 35,000 killed since the war began on October 7—with more than 34,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza and the West Bank and 1,200 deaths in Israel.
As of May 3:
97 journalists and media workers were confirmed dead: 92 Palestinian, 2 Israeli, and 3 Lebanese.
16 journalists were reported injured.
4 journalists were reported missing.
25 journalists were reported arrested.
