Sure it's happened before!
It happened in North Carolina's 9th district in 2018, where a guy working for republican candidate Mark Harris was found to be illegally harvesting absentee ballots. At least 7 people were charged with felonies in connection with this election fraud committed on behalf of a republican candidate.
And the seat remained open for months until another election could be scheduled.
