One way to get out of jury duty

During the jury selection phase for the sentencing trial of Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz, one prospective juror asked the judge to excuse her from jury duty, which is estimated to take one month.

Her reason? She is married, she has children whose birthdays are coming up, and she has a "sugar daddy" who she needs to meet with every day!

Judge Elizabeth Scherer did not initially understand what Miss Bristol was referring to, but ultimately she dismissed her from the jury.

Just be a felon. Problem solved.

@SW-User That works too!
@SW-User Or, believe it or not, be a police officer or firefighter.

@bijouxbroussard I 100% would never want a cop on my jury.

@bijouxbroussard Or, as I discovered, be a mathematician.

After I was not placed on a jury, there was a break before the trial started, and I ran into the defense attorney in the men's room. He told me that no prosecutor wants a mathematician on the jury, out of a fear that we would have too high a standard of "proof".

@DrWatson Scientists too.
@SW-User Now that so many police have been on trial for murder and misconduct it’s been argued that they deserve a jury of their peers, too.
@DrWatson Alas, teachers are not exempt. But once you get to 70 you can choose to be exempted in some states.
Unless you’re like my father and consider it a privilege. Pop last served on a local jury, as foreman when he was 88. 😳

@bijouxbroussard Felons should have juries full of felons then.

@bijouxbroussard I have been called for jury duty a few times but was never selected. I am 70 now, but like your father I would show up again if I received a notice.

Teachers are not exempt, but the court has always honored my request to defer my service until the summer.
@DrWatson I used to have mine deferred as well. I seemed to get a summons every year like clockwork, but I’d call in and my number would be excused.

@SW-User or old.
@Nelladell In my state you can choose to be exempted at 70. I have eight more years. 😅

@SW-User No it doesn't!

@DrWatson Not in Oregon!
Peaches · F
@Nelladell Old people do jury duty over here in Oregon.
@Peaches They don’t have the option to exempt ? My father will probably continue to serve if called, but Mom can’t anymore. She exempted back at 70.

@bijouxbroussard I suppose they might, 🤔 I've never checked. I only went once and threw the other 3 letters to appear away. I don't want to do jury duty!👎
Nelladell · 80-89, F
Thanks, Peaches. Maybe that's true in Missouri as well. Perhaps I just over-reacted to the notification card's question about age. @Peaches
Peaches · F
@Nelladell It can take a lot out of you. The last one I went to many years ago lasted several hours!👎🙄I just won't go anymore.
Nelladell · 80-89, F
@Peaches I didn't realize that we had the option not to go.
Peaches · F
@Nelladell They letters I get say if you can't go to get a doctors letter and blah blah blah blah! I just throw them away. Someone said I could go to jail for it, but no one has ever came looking for me.😉

@Peaches Awaiting developments. 👍
@DrWatson Do you know I got my first summons since 2018 ? Waiting in my mailbox yesterday. I think I jinxed myself ! 🤦🏽‍♀️
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard If you want to get out of it just ask if they'll provide drinking breaks.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard Uh-oh! I had better pay attention to my mailbox as well!
