I Love Redwoods

I was just passing through the forest as a tourist 20 odd years ago.I stayed.
A virgin redwood grove where the canopy towers 300 feet above you and sunlight filters down in misty little whisps, just like in a postcard sent from a magic faerie dreamland.
Hot damn,I want to hang out there.
Among thousand year old giants ?
Rain or shine .
It rains often,in the ancient rainforest.
It's quiet.
eerie in the stillness,
a bit otherworldly but so much of this earth,
a time before recorded history,
life cycles and timeframes which dwarf our conceptions.
They speak if you listen, you know
(and not just because I have eaten fistfuls
of certain mushrooms,well,err)

And the coolness is I get to go out next week and take part in our annual 'forests unlimited' planting session and poke a few hundred seedlings in the ground,on land with a conservation easement so that it will not be logged in perpetuity. Our group puts in 1500 each year,a tiny effort to stem the onslaught of deforestation.
Ever seen a clear cut up close? I don't recommend it.
Hopefully these new groves will prosper,we have a good success rate-though given our species voracious appetite for natural resources I'm given to cynicism at times. But if I can help leave a future grove,a future forest for our descendants to feel the same majestic wonder, then I'm down.A healthier legacy than this pile of plastic water bottles I see piled next to the desk.Yeah,a desk made out of an old growth redwood board that was going to the dump before I got ahold of it. people.sheesh. The largest tree ever recorded was measured at the site where our local supermarket now stands. There's a plaque,it's a historically noteworthy parking lot.
I'm gonna go get muddy and crawl through giant ferns soon. I'm stoked.

hey,thanks for checking it out.
If you are ever around stumptown look me up.
-they seriously called this place stumptown after mowing down all the old trees after the turn of the last century to rebuild San Fransisco after the big 'quake.
