Maybe time to install a wood burning stove?

@Justenjoyit Wood may also be in high demand and short supply. Stock up for the entire winter if you can.

@Justenjoyit Something will have to give because that seems like way too much for a retired person to pay unless they have quite a bit in savings. Prices of groceries and other things are so inflated right now I think if prices increased that much here in the USA older people would freeze to death if they had no other relatives to stay with.

@cherokeepatti I have enough wood only because I only lit the fire when it gets really cold and it has not been cold for a few years now.

Schools and workplaces are supposed to keep max 18°C. My hands would freeze off if I was supposed to work with the computer in 18°C.

@cherokeepatti No, that wouldn't help. 😕 I simply have to exercise them frequently for better circulation.

@CrazyMusicLover Have to be careful if you have arthritis.

@CrazyMusicLover If we'll have 18°C inside I won't even complain too much honestly 😅
The great majority of buildings here (including mine) are heated with methane, which could stop flowing anytime.. at least winters are relatively mild where I am, rarely going below 0 degrees, but still

Do you have a source of water or ground water available? We heat our boat very efficiently with a water sourced heat pump... Ridiculous amount of heat extracted from even quite cold water for a very modest amount of electrical power..
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@pdqsailor1 I do have ground water but I just use it to water the garden

Measure the temperature of the water if it is say 50F (10C) you have LOADS of heat available... How big a space are you heating? We have a MarinAIRE heat pump on our boat of 14KBTU AC / 15KBTU heat @Justenjoyit It draws about nine amps of AC power at 110 Volts (4.5 amps at 220 Volts) - you can get them in either power configuration.. They are not free but the pay back is likely less than one heating season which means they are a no brainer... Mine runs water through it at the rate of 7 Litres per minute.. (I have a water flow meter on mine) ... In December when the snow is flying I can keep the boat to 24C with no problem and I have no insulation what so ever.. If you have a source of ground water, in effect you have geothermal heat...

Stay warm. Hope you have enough blankets too.
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I think some people are going to really suffer 😢
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Justenjoyit very sad. I think this is one reason I’ve gotten such an interest in Tiny homes. They don’t have a lot of storage and space but can be heated and cooled for a lot less money. With solar panels and a small wood-burning stove a person would have it made.

Yup. More worried about the kids than myself, but this winter is going to be not fun
