Snow day during the big depression (in the 30s and 40s)

When the snow was too deep for us to walk two miles so we rode to school in the farm wagon pulled by our team of horses.

Grampa used to keep his draft team rough shod in the winter. There was a bit of a hill and the sleigh traffic would turn the road to glare ice making bob sleigh pulling impossible for the Percheron horses he was so famous for raising.

@hippyjoe1955 Man, he was really uptown.

@Nelladell He was the town vet. He had no formal training but all the farmers would call on him if they had a sick animal. His nick name was Doc. When a farmer said call Doc he was talking about Grampa.

@Fluffybull When I was a kid I would often be given the Percheron we called Bess to ride. She was pretty docile and too big to put a saddle on so I would sit rather spread eagle on this table wide back 16 hands in the air hope like mad that the 'table' would still be under me when I was bounced in the air by her movements. One day when I was about 8 I was given the task of taking a herd of cattle out to pasture and given old Bess to ride. I got the cattle about 1/2 a mile down the trail when old Bess decided it was time for oats. She spun around and began trotting back to the barn. There was nothing I could do to stop her. I was pulling on the reins and trying to kick her and trying desperately not to fall off her back as the stupid animal kept right on going. When we arrived at the barn Dad asked me what I was doing back so soon. My feeble answer was "I don't know the horse brought me here".

@hippyjoe1955 sigh. horses always knew they could get away with anything with me, too

@Nelladell Old Bess was 4 years older than me! I was scared to drop the reins because I knew if I did she would come to a screeching halt likely launching me over her head. Then I would have no way of getting back on so I try as I might I was just along for the ride.

@hippyjoe1955 Lol. Thank goodness horseback riding was not a prerequisite for anything important in life.
