@DeWayfarer I'm guessing it's the shadow of the building. I took that picture standing on the balcony.

@PEACH4LIFE the more I think about this, the more I doubt that's the reason. If it was a shadow from the your building, then the sand in front would be in the shadow as well.

I'm beginning to think it's a rare photographic event. You see the Ocean itself can reflect light back onto the sand.

I believe you have a unique image there. Such "refraction" doesn't happen all that often. It's got to be just right to happen.
