Te Rauparaha's stronghold was on Kapiti Island. His haka "Ka Mate Ka Mate" is well known being the traditional Haka of the All Blacks.

All but 20 hectares of Kapiti is a bird sanctuary and you can visit. It is beautiful and yes I have been on the Kapiti.

@KiwiBird Yes, and he's best known as a warlike savage and cannibal. Kapiti Island is better off without him or his memory.
