One Last Winter Hike
Frozen Over
by: Rob Paquin
Step by step and going higher
Destined for the peak
Sinking down there deep inside
With no thought out of reach
The icy wind is blowing colder
He climbs but he does not seek
Step by step he climbs that trail
Like a nameless speck of sand
Wasting all the footfalls fallen
Ever since his time began
Snowstorm raging at his back
Burying where he began
Step by step he’s reached the top
And contemplated what he’s got
Dissected each and every thought
And he knows it’s time to sleep
Wasted from his efforts spent
Knowing that they made no dent
Into the problems he’s been sent
And the snow just grows too deep
So at last he’s made his bed
And finally he rests his head
Laying down five words were said
“Please don’t ever mourn me.”
In silence he laid there alone
And he felt like he did at home
And when the frozen hit his bones
His soul was finally free.
The snow continued and covered him
Taking him away from all his sins
A final hike where his life ends
A last place for him to be.
