Is that a terrapin?

(I live in Maryland.)
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
I was told it’s a soft shell so if that’s another name then yes ☺️@JoyfulSilence
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77 Oh, I do not know. I do not know if its shell is hard or soft. I do not think I have ever seen one in person.

It is just the mascot of the U of MD:

Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence 😃 I looked it up, and terrapin is a general grouping term for some types of turtles. I am going to include teenage mutant ninja turtles in that group, just because I can. 🤣

@Littlewing77

Heroes in a half shell!
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence I used to vacation in Ocean City in the summers and I’ve been to inner harbor (all before age 20). Just sharing my Maryland experience lol
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77 I grew up in Ohio but have worked in DC for the last 22 years, and have lived nearby in both VA and MD. I used to make the long drive to OC every once in a while, and even spent the night a few times. But I have not done it in years. The drive is just so long! I have been to the Inner Harbor a few times. I love the National Aquarium! Here is a photo I took:

Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence Wow that is beautiful! NatGeo worthy! I got to visit DC again in 2017 and loved it! I don’t think I would enjoy working there. Sounds like you’ve made it work for you.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77 Oh, it is OK working there. The commute can be a chore, but I take a train so I can be on my phone or sleep. Yet I have been working from home during Covid. And in about 2 years my office will move to a MD suburb. I am more worried and annoyed about the move, than working in DC, because at least my office was in a decent area. The new location is in a slum.

I work for the federal government so that is why I worked in DC. It would not have been my first choice on a location, but they were the first that would hire me and I needed a job. I never thought I would make a career out it!
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence I can relate. I worked for the County government for the last 23 years in california. Never planned on it. My last job site was not in the safest neighborhood but they at least had secure parking. I think going anywhere to work again will pretty much suck!
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

What sort of work do you do?

I am a statistician supporting a government survey.

I have never been to California. I had planned a trip to Yosemite last spring but had to cancel due to Covid.
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence I’ve worked for social services all these years and semi-retired to Florida kind of on a whim in 2020. My last six years were actually as a social worker. I enjoy working with data to track and improve programs and policies and have worked with great stats folks!

You just reminded me I didn’t get to Yosemite! All of these years I was caught up in work and personal issues. Now I’m finally breathing! It’s great!
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

Sounds like a nice career, and you got to help people!

I almost never work with the public, unless I am giving a talk at a conference (which I have not done in years). But I help out a lot in my agency.

Gosh, I wish I could retire. But I still have 11 more years to go.

I would even welcome part time, but I do not think I could in my current position, and I would lose benefits if I could.

I hope I can get to Yosemite someday. Or anywhere!
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence right? I’m choosing to hope we can safely travel again sooner rather than later.
Being a help in your office has probably made more of a difference and helped others more than you know. Just watch It’s a Wonderful Life 🙂
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

I still travel, but only locally. I am on a pier on the Bay now. There is a loud osprey nearby on a nest box on a tall pole in the water. Gosh it wont shut up, LOL! Tweet tweet tweet tweet!

Yes, the world would crumble without me! 🤪
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence that is why I moved to Florida. The great outdoors! The green! The water! I’m really happy and at peace here.

You are essential! And dammit people like you!
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

I used to go to Florida like every other February, for a while. Yet just for the warmth. I prefer to visit mountains, but not in winter.

It is 80 degrees here now. The warmest it has been all year, I think. But it is VERY windy! I think the light post near me might just fall on my head soon.

I am technically a non-essential worker. I get furloughed every time the GOP shuts down the government. They still end up paying us (for work we did not do).

I am glad people like me. Sometimes I wonder, though. My posts tend to be ignored.
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence Be careful of falling lights! 😮 In Cali I would drive an hour to the desert when it got below 60 lol. Living so near the desert has now made it nigh on impossible for me to tolerate cool or cold weather. I grew up in PA but couldn’t imagine having to bundle up all winter again.
Mountains are pretty. I get car sick easily so avoid frequent trips up and down.

I’m in the Nature Coast area on the gulf side in Florida. Still more rural and less commercial. I feel so fortunate to be here.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

The wind has died down a little here. The sun is sinking.

I love the desert. I want to move to one when I retire. Mostly to avoid sweating in Eastern humidity, and to have warm feet.

I grew up and went to college near Cleveland. But then I went to UVA for graduate school, got a job in DC, and have been in the DC area ever since. I hate winter! My feet get so cold.

I am not sure where the Nature Coast is. I have vacationed on the Atlantic, from Port St. Lucie to Key West. Yet when I was a kid we went to Clearwater beach, St. Pete, and Sanibel Island. I loved the Clearwater sand!
Littlewing77 · 51-55, F
@JoyfulSilence Clearwater is the only big beach I’ve been to so far and I agree about the sand! And the water temp was in the 80s at the end of October! My friend and I just stayed in and floated! Nature coast is north of Tampa area and below the pan handle. I’m sure there are more finite boundaries but I’m not an exact person lol
Trust me, the desert is HOT. Dry heat or not, 100-115 is not comfortable. Probably because the grass is always greener on the other side, I’m liking the closeness of the humidity. Of course, I nap when it gets too hot lol
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Littlewing77

That water sounds nice!

Yeah, I should find a mild desert.

I was in Phoenix once when it was 102. I was unloading my suitcase at my hotel, and I paused because I forgot what I was doing. So hot! But my hotel had an outdoor pool which I enjoyed after sunset. It was in the 90's. I had it all to myself. After, I sat wet in a chair and it felt so good.
