If you go out, be sure to take an umbrella.

A friend of mine stayed overnight in a shelter in Lakeland Florida when a tornado was coming through. Turns out, none of the homes were damaged in the area but the shelter itself got the roof torn off and they all sat in 2 feet of water until sunrise the next morning.
@swirlie Oh wow, that's amazing.

That was the last time any of them stayed in a shelter overnight!
@swirlie They survived in the shelter though even with the roof torn off. if it hits your house you are not likely to live. Houses are shredded right down to the foundations.

I've since found out that what their shelter was, was the recreation center at a mobile trailer park in Florida! Turns out, all the mobile homes in that trailer park were left intact after the tornado went through but the rec center within the park got demolished with a dozen residents taking shelter in it for the night!

One of the misleading things about tornado destruction I was reading about was the effect the local building codes have on the total damage in the area where a tornado hits.

The building codes are so poor in Florida that it takes very little to knock anything over, but the resulting damage makes it appear as if a major tornado went through, when in fact it was only a small tornado that came face to face with an area where poor building codes were an acceptable building standard.
