I would love to help, but the further west I have been is Cheyenne Wyoming.
@Musicman that's past Nebraska though lol

@Musicman Did you like Wyoming? Are there places you would recommend?

@TravelSolar On that trip we went to Cheyenne and Denver Colorado. I would definitely recommend both of them. 🙂

I like AZ and NM in the winter

@SW-User Do you have specific areas you liked? Natural or historical sites?

@TravelSolar one winter I went from Durango CO to Farmington NM/bisti badlands into the painted desert and Sedona.

Another I went all over the southwest but my favorites were Tucson and Joshua tree. I wasn't into quartzite like a lot of people, though it was cool.

I had to stay southwest because I was in a van but loved it.

Given the mountain crossings and generally high elevations between NE and the PNW, I think you're starting awfully late in the season. It can turn into serious winter on those mountain passes. I would've recommended the obvious: Yellowstone, but its average elevation of 8000 feet makes it iffy at best.

The safest bets at this time of year are along the Pacific coast. Low elevation and rain--not snow or ice. Coastal beauty, especially Oregon...and northern California--the redwoods--but still, an emphasis on cool-weather clothing and gear. Coastal parts of Olympic Park in NW WA are also pretty.
the badlands are always interesting. if you go up to montana, you can get to glacier park and drive the road to the sun? I think it's called. it's featured in the intro to kubrick's shinning moving.
Flee, go away, retreat, get outa Dodge, hie-dee- ho, hele on, brah- Winter is chasing you!
