She was The First ! - - - - - - - - A Story of Love and Loss

Part 2 of 4

Flash back to the Tuesday before, and it was our cabin's turn at the Camp Store.
We we're super poor, and my mom didn't leave us much money. I gave my younger brother a dollar and let him go up to the window.
There she was as radiant as ever. A look of command as she parceled out the candies and drinks that everyone was clamoring for. My brother walked up and asked her for what he wanted as if she was just another person anybody could talk to. I remember the pangs of jealousy as she looked him in his eye and gave him what he asked for. I think I remember her looking over at me, but I was never quite sure, and I turned my head immediately and made some joke to a friend standing nearby. A bunch of us laughed together as any little boy would when something inappropriate was just said. By the time I looked back to the window again she was gone to get another something sweet for another waiting kid.

My brother strode up to us all. A soda in his hand and more candy than he should have been able to afford.
He quickly sat and began to feast upon his candy while simultaneously opening the soda can. All as if he didn't just come face to face with the most beautiful girl in the whole camp. I looked down at him in judgement and scorn as he looked back and said to me..., "She didn't even charge me anything. Can I keep the dollar?"

His hand half-held out the dollar as if he expected me to say "Yes."
Before I could answer he then asked to no one in particular, "Do you think she likes me?"
I snatched the dollar from his hand and said a stern "No!"
The others all laughed again, as I stood there wondering which of his questions, he thought I had answered? Wondering what all my newfound friends thought was funny about the exchange?
Wondering if she was watching or if she even cared at all about anything I did?
A brotherly type of contempt settled within my mind as we all trudged on back up the hill to our cabin in the woods.

Her brother, Alex out of nowhere, asked me how I was? All I could bring myself to do was snap back a reply of "I'm fine."

Wednesday morning came eventually. Drama was on the docket. I was about to assume the role of an Orphan from a tiny mini-version skit of Annie to be performed at Parent's night on Friday. I sang my heart out. It really was a Hard Knock Life ! (of sorts)

@YoMomma I did.
This is part 2 of what I expect to be 4 parts.
