I have some things, no tent. The boy is interested in survival things so I buy or he buys some things that could be used in such a situation. There is a part of me that wants to buy some large tarps. They can be used for so many things but thinking how they can be fashioned into tents if the need arises. Or put over a tent that you already have to deflect rain in case it seeps into the tent material. Also good for a lean-to shelter but not into that much due to my father being in a manic phase taking us camping on snow one December when I was 7 years old. He stayed up all night stoking the fire but my sisters, myself and mother were trying to sleep. My sisters slept in the middle and stayed warmer than me and mom did. I shivered all night and we had a single wool blanket to cover us all and it didn’t cover the edge well. Not a good memory and he woke us up and made us go to school the next morning, it was on a school night. 😖

I have a rocket stove, a Coleman oven to go over it or another fire, rocket stove accessories such as a large pot with a tight lid, a coffee maker, small pans to go into the Coleman oven, and some other things I could use camping. The rocket stove can burn a variety of fuels so in an emergency situation I can use it at home, have a covered cart full of dry branches that will fit in it.

@cherokeepatti a military shelter half has the buttons and gromlets to be a tarp or a tent

@MarineBob yes, some are sold that way. I like to watch Corporal’s Corner channel videos on YouTube. He makes some shelters with tarps every few videos.
@cherokeepatti I'm partial to the Swedish torch.

@NativePortlander1970 Swedish torches are cool. A local small grocery store sold them at one time, they were tied together with baling wire or something. Easy and cheap to make and I don’t know if they sold them all. But there is lake east of here where people camp and bought supplies for it at that store so maybe they did for camp outs.
@cherokeepatti They are indeed, my Grandfather was born in Stockholm and came to America as a baby. His father taught him how to make them, who in turn taught my mother, who later taught my older brothers and me, and all her older siblings, on the family farm when they'd go out camping and fishing at the lake. It's really awesome a local store sold them.

@NativePortlander1970 Here is a deluxe rocket stove that I would love to have in my backyard if I ever got rich enough to buy it. I love the features, a place to put a stovepipe to vent away the initial smoke so I wouldn’t have to breathe it, the self feeding angled fuel feeder so I wouldn’t have to keep pushing down the branches, etc…the smooth cooktop with a cover on the burner so it wouldn’t soot up a pan so much, easily cleaned and would not have to worry about balancing pans that may get knocked over. And the other part of the stove would make a good food warmer.
@cherokeepatti That's pretty cool. I also had a few of these at one time.

@NativePortlander1970 I thought about making those. I have 90% alcohol but heard denatured is better. Needs to be vented very well so better to use outdoors, it sucks the oxygen out of the air. I did a little experiment with alcohol & cotton balls burning a bit in a stainless steel small bowl in the sun room with the windows open. Could tell it was sucking the oxygen out of the air. But just a little bit of alcohol burnt for quite a while so could be a good option in some circumstances. A Sterno can will fit in the bottom of my rocket stove, and can be refilled with cotton balls and alcohol as an alternative fuel source.
@cherokeepatti They're definitely an outdoor device, and denatured is superior for them, but 91% iso will work as well in a pinch. Sterno is also great as a fire starter if the wood is wet, the longer burning will dry it out when placed in the bottom of a pile of split logs with kindling.
@cherokeepatti Another trick is to soak the kindling with cheap store brand cooking oil because the oil burns off first before the wood.

@NativePortlander1970 smokes bad and smells bad though. I do have some canola oil that can be used for that though.
@cherokeepatti True, it has to be a neutral oil like canola to prevent the smell.
