Sicilian farmers protest soaring fuel prices as tractor costs threaten farm operations
Sicilian farmers drove tractors onto the Palermo-Agrigento road on Monday to protest rising fuel costs, which they say are making agricultural production increasingly difficult.
Agrisat, which organised the demonstration, said diesel prices had reached between €2.20 and €2.40 per litre, with farmers calling for agricultural diesel to be made available at a lower price.
Sicily has allocated €10 million for agriculture under a €30 million fuel-cost support package, but Agrisat says the assistance is insufficient. Road hauliers and fishing groups in Sicily have also announced or threatened further action over rising fuel costs.
