i think i had these in my yard making the thuds

Ice quakes, or cryoseisms , occur when water trapped underground freezes rapidly during extreme cold. As ice expands, it puts pressure on the soil and rock, eventually causing a sudden crack. The energy released can sound like thunder or feel like a mini earthquake.

I can see this being a problem in your area even. Bedrock is pretty deep in your part of the USA.

Cryoseisms is not a problem when bedrock is close to the surface. Yet you're in the river valley area. So the soil can be very deep.
