We have a hose pipe ban so I decided to water mine by tipping buckets on it. What I noticed was the water ran on areas of dead grass and not into the live clumps and was about 2.5mm deep. Low and behold new bright grass around the side of the older blue grass due to the roots seeking sideways to the water then shoot upwards. Lawn roughly 50% patched up already in 10 days.
