Colored rocks of Lake McDonald

Glacier National Park, Montana

The rocks' colors are determined by the amount of iron in them:
Red and maroon rocks: Have more iron and were formed in shallower waters where the iron oxidized

Blue and green rocks: Have less iron and were formed in deeper waters where they weren't exposed to as much oxygen

Has anyone been here? I haven't yet, but it's on my list.

I have not been there. The colorful rocks are beautiful though, and I've picked up a few along the way...that I 'cherish'.
@Piper i pick up rocks wherever I go too. I put them all around the ferns in my back yard, I like to think it brings a little magic of the world.
