Not even the whole continent, here in Veneto alone we range from -20°C (Alps) to ≥ +40°C (cities in summer); places that are 1h away from one another by car

That's essentially a result of the vertical temperature profile of the troposphere. The temperature decreases approximately by 1℃ every 100m.
