The Birdhouse Blues
Tonight I am spending my after work hours trying to transplant a birds nest.
It all started last fall I suppose. Though I really wasn't in the loop until just before the first snowfall of the winter.
I have a big section of yard along the side of my house that no one spends much time in. I have a super large front yard, a super large back yard, and a fairly decent sized side yard that faces the street. Which is where I do all my gardening in. So pretty much, the only times I am on that side of the house is when I'm mowing the lawn or cleaning up the branches that fall constantly.
Either way, there I was preparing for the winter snows of New England and I happened to notice a small hole in the outside wall on that side of the house. I paid little mind to it at the time and just kept clearing the fallen branches. As I snowblow pathways all around the house in the winter. 3 days later I heard some tapping and scraping inside my wall and I was immediately reminded of the hole. I thought for sure it was a squirrel nest.
I started to pay more attention and just after the storm, I saw it. A tiny little 3 inch bird go flying in. My wife wanted it gone right away. I'm too kind hearted though and said that if I displaced it in the winter it would likely die. She relented and my viewpoint won out.
I was hoping to get the birds out before the typical mating season but that never seemed to happen as I am always pretty busy. When I finally did remember I realized there were likely chicks inside. And now that I have finally moved it, I feel a bit bad about my timing.
There are 3 tiny little bird babies in the nest that I dug out of the wall.
I used a 12" x 17" - 3 sided box wooden box and a perfectly cut piece of hard insulation board with a hole cut into it. I made the hole as close to the size of the hole they had in the side of the house and once I got the nest snuggled safe inside, I placed the box on an old outdoor cabinet with the box/nest right in front of the old entrance into my wall.
I've been out back here for the last hour and finally the parents have figured it out and have gone inside. I was really worried they wouldn't.
Hopefully it all works out and I can turn the now bigger hole into an AC vent just in time for Summer ?
