I met someone from Norway who was telling me how he backed into a pole and put some dents in his rental car

He said he was going to have to call the rental company and tell them he made a mistake

I told him the American way is to admit nothing but I don’t think he’s going to take my advice

In Norway the times i have rented a car, it doesnt matter. The rental company will put you at fault and you will be up for paying damages.
Unless say a car slammed into you and there was a police report and mostly likely the person at fault insurance company would pay for damages.. if that person has insurance anyway..

Without a police report or anything like that, if you bring a rental car back damages, youre at fault for it despite if you claim it was your fault or not
