Is it an American thing to have to worry about losing your job because you're sick?

Like there isn't a valid enough reason to miss work. I have the flu, I feel somewhat better this morning but still awful, still contagious and our customer base is definitely the most vulnerable age population. But I'm going to lose my job if I take another day off...

Not only am I going to be patient zero for everyone else at work and our customers, but I am so tired and in pain. I don't know how I can make it through my shift. They just need my body to be there...

What a shit feeling.

I can't get over people having to work and use holiday through cancer treatments, or the fact that maternity leave isnt an actual thing.

My country isn't the best, but we seem to have a few fair better basic human rights over America.
@V00doo Almost anywhere in Europe we have proper sick leave. In other words, if you are sick, you don't have to work (and you are paid).

The US is so broken in so many ways.
@V00doo Where I worked we not only had maternity leave, but our union fought for (and won) paternity leave. A friend whose wife had a difficult pregnancy and childbirth was able to take time off to be with her and help.
@bijouxbroussard Just as it should be
@Adeptlinguist As a relatively new arrival to Sweden, I was blown away by the maternity/paternity leave provisions

@Adeptlinguist Wow, that’s amazing. Here a lot depends on the state you live in. Also, union shop jobs tend to provide more benefits for workers.
