Most of those I have met are perfectly normal people in most ways, much the same as people the world over.
But several of those who I call friends have strange and alien beliefs regarding government, governance, society, etc. The most striking thing is that there is so little trust in the institutions of the state whether federal, state, or just the village they live in as well as of people in general.
It is very odd because my experience is that most individual Americans encountered outside any formal context are friendly and helpful.
