Would you please tell me the difference between this analogy, of the gullible Consumer, and the American Dream?
The American Dream is like a man searching for an apartment to call home. He combs through the listings, finding most of them out of his price range. The few he can afford don’t quite meet his expectations. But then, he finds the perfect apartment: within his budget, with all the amenities he desires, and no restrictions. He eagerly heads to sign the lease, and everything seems to fall into place. He pays the deposit and the rent, feeling satisfied with his decision.
But just as he’s about to settle in, the landlord hands him an additional document. “What’s this?” he asks. The landlord replies, “These are the rules and additional stipulations.” The document includes maintenance fees, surcharges, a curfew at 11 p.m., restrictions on alcohol, loud music, pets, and even unauthorized guests. “None of this was in the contract,” he protests. The landlord calmly responds, “If you’d read the fine print, you’d see that we reserve the right to implement additional fees and rules as necessary for the upkeep of the building and the safety and security of the other tenants.”
