Be kind to people in life or death situations.

People here accuse me of being overdramatic. Maybe I am. But maybe they are also desensitized. We literally sign ourselves up to talk to people overseas who are in very different situations than us, and then we refuse to understand them. People in situations where they have to watch their economy fall apart, or their home get invaded, or their loved ones get hurt in ways we have never seen with our own two eyes. They have no food or money or any guarantee that they won't starve or freeze to death by tomorrow, or worse. Then they see Americans concerned about things like gas prices. And I've seen this time and time again, when these people overseas feel misunderstood, they try to be kind about it and talk, but before ANYTHING can be even remotely addressed or talked about, we just find something to feel threatened by and we start insulting and blocking them. You don't understand how that can be upsetting?

I know this post will cause more harm than good. That's just the way we are. This is why so many people leave SW, or even worse, start hating YOU for YOUR nationality or identity. At some point I think we should recognize that it's because of us.

I am friends with a family in the Philippines. When I was working I could help them out but now that I am retired I cannot do as much. It is quite distressing. I've discussed a big dilemma that I am facing regarding this with a few folks on here as well as with a minister. You do what you can do. If we all did that the world would be a very different place.
@Tastyfrzz Can you tell me more about the dilemma? Personally I struggle with the idea that I can't help everybody and it bothers me. Is that what you mean?

I took an ayahuasca retreat in peru and one omday we volunteered in an orphanage helping kids who were malnourished or disfigured and it was a very sad and devastating thing to witness and be a part of.

@SinlessOnslaught It's normally scientists who stay there for a longer time in research stations. I wouldn't know how to say it otherwise.
