The moment he said...a bunch of Asian people ..he lost me .
I do understand what he's trying to say. I don't need that explained to me. And I get it.
On the other hand, the history of the world and cultures is basically the history of cultural appropriation.
Cultures living side by side will take things from each other. That's how it works.
Again, I do understand his point and I am not talking about individuals who would use those cultural differences to mock or erase another culture.
I get it.
But i think this guy is responding to the tensions taking place between the black snd Asian people.
When I see others appropriating my culture I see it as an opportunity to build bridges sharing in s common like for whatever is being appropriated at the time.
I see it as a compliment..

@CurrentName There’s long been a lot of anti-black prejudice among other groups of color. It’s unfortunate, but it’s so. Even among groups that also have members of African descent in their communities, they’re often treated differently.
I was raised by a family who welcomed everyone, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity, into our home. I’ve always taken my cue from them, and I don’t regret it. I’ve gotten my feelings hurt along the way, but I still support inclusiveness.
What I often hear from others in my community, especially recently, is people finding it difficult to feel complimented by outsiders adopting aspects of our culture, when they also openly express disrespect and contempt for our people.

Btw, I am not in any way dismissing what you are saying. I validate it and understand it. I just don't think that guy is the best person to tackle this topic because (understandably) he is coming from a retaliatory defensive position. And I get that too.

This guy should stick to comedy. Appropriating marching band drill styles? Really?

@SpectralMourning What he speaks of has in general terms long been fact, however.

@bijouxbroussard I don’t doubt that it happens. Not one bit. Just found this to be a very weak example for the point he wanted to make.

@SpectralMourning As I said from the onset, even the idea is generally dismissed by the mainstream culture.

when you come from a background where native languages, traditions, religions have been lost or banned, and have needed to be reconstructed.
This is something when the outcry first began that many, including myself, didn't see, didn't realize and how could we... it hasn't happened to us. Not an excuse, just a reason.
I do think we quickly caught on and now understand the sensitivity - most of us anyway. Unfortunately, there are loud, powerful voices that don't want to get it and I don't see that changing.

I suspect the real reason is to promote cultural destruction.
