I watched it all the way through and found it very interesting. As I think you suspected, it's not going to change anyone's mind, but it does give a take on why it's difficult for some people to even begin to understand another point of view. Our own biases are usually invisible to us. Watching something like this does give some help in trying to stand outside and be objective.
I liked the points towards the end analysing the traits of 'right' and 'left' and then explaining the need for better communication all round.
I won't be signing up though: he makes my brain hurt. 🥴

The responses have confirmed some of the points made. Indeed I think most Americans cant see is cloearly, because they are inside the goldfish bowl and therefore they see themselves as the "normal". Not that normal represents right or wrong.. Its a numbers game. And with 320 million against 8 billion, they dont have them..😷

The good professor is trying to make sociology/psychology 101 sound profound. 🙄
Intuition, groupism and moral foundations are what kept 90% of voters voting as they always vote. The 5 or 10% who shifted or stayed home did so for the perfectly obvious reason that the Democrats and their complicit media were so transparently and clumsily lying that it was time to throw them out and give the other liars a chance again.

@Thinkerbell Again we agree.. I have long contended that American politics doesnt have a good side. Both are funded by the same group of very rich people with similar agendas😷

That's the old tweeledum-tweedledee critique of American politics, which has had some truth to it since WW2, at least as far as the establishments of both parties are concerned.
But Reagan and Trump upset the Republican establishment and the current left wing of the Democrats is upsetting their establishment. I think very few of establishment Democrats really want, for example, a socialist mayor in New York City, although of course billionaire George Soros will back Mamdani, but Soros is not exactly establishment.
I think the biggest problem in American politics has been the kleptocracy that has characterized it for decades. I don't think Truman or Eisenhower were crooks, but Johnson certainly was, as were far too many politicians in both parties since.

@Thinkerbell Again we agree. I wish I had a solution to fix the problem that doesnt involve a lot of hardship for a lot of people and maybe something worse.. The rich arent going to give up their position without a real struggle they can afford to pay for..😷

I agree with you. This video is way too complex for the average American to comprehend. So far, you've received 79 views and I'll bet that 75 of those views never lasted more than 20 seconds into this video. Great video though!

He's not a professor, he a scholar, so sponsored into a "think tank" associated with the University but he's a declared member of a political party and actually a dentist. Not a true academic.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@KatyO83 The speaker is not the only person referred to in the video. As for the rest of it, I suggest that you have not addressed the material, but decided to attack the source. If he delivered the video in a clown suit, they doesnt make it wrong..But it is a rather trumpian way of responding. Something to think about..😷

Gonna be a long four years. They made their bed, they can lie in it.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@DoubleRings I agree.. While my humanity would like to save Americans from themselves, its not my job and its one so many dont want done.. The nation has been effectively paralysed for over a decade...While the world moves on..😷
val70 · 51-55
You set out to be bias and there you stayed
val70 · 51-55
@whowasthatmaskedman Not complaining, just stating :)
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@val70 OK. Stating what? From my perspective, Twink and I have a respectful, constructive relationship, even if we differ in viewpoint. Politically I am neither left, nor right. I am just in favour of what works for the greatest number and can be paid for. (Which neither side of America is). My video is about the culture and psychology of Americans that causes them to vote as they do and contrast that with the vast majotiry of other western democracies.. The only people I can take issue with is those who blindly follow the US herd (left or right) and come out with the reason that just because they are American they are right, in the face of all political and financial evidence..😷
val70 · 51-55
@whowasthatmaskedman Like Thinkerbell went through with you, there were definite factors that were completely negated and that's no firm ground for any argument

i dont think complex should be the word seeing as its a youtube post. more like ridiculous.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Penny I only posted if because it was posted by an English academic from Oxford who was without bias himself and just presenting the facts and citing sources. Something you so rarely get from Americans. But as I stated, its not for everyone. It does rather scrape the paint off the American way of thinking..😷

@BuzzedLightyear Thank you again for confirming the points the video makes. I might point out that just because American exceptionalism used to exist, doesnt mean it still does. Nor does that make you personally exceptional.😷
BuzzedLightyear · 61-69
@whowasthatmaskedman blah blah blah, you're so impressed with yourself, aren't you, tool?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@BuzzedLightyear No. Nor am I impressed with you. If you want respect, try a reasoned argument. But wait. You just feel stuff. You dont need to think.. But please keep it up. I am sure there are hundreds of Americans who also support MAGA who will agree with you.. I dont expect to convince you.. And its probably a little cruel of me to encourage you to speak out and keep looking a fool to all the rest..😷

@kodiac Exactly the kind of comment predicted by right wingers in this video. Thank you for the "confirmation bias" . (also mentioned)😷
