“Mockingbird” – Inez & Charlie Foxx
[media=https://youtu.be/Mp1bHy3JjOU]
R&B song based on the traditional lullaby, “Hush Little Baby”.
It was composed and first recorded by the brother-sister duo, Inez and Charlie Foxx. Their recording was released in 1963 and reached #2 on the US R&B chart and #7 on the US pop chart.
Many performers have since covered “Mockingbird”, most notably Carly Simon and James Taylor, who had a Top Ten hit with their version in 1974.
Despite their obvious talent, Inez and Charlie Foxx had less success with subsequent recordings, but their tours were popular in Europe and their music was said to be influential in the development of the UK’s Northern Soul movement.
The duo disbanded in 1971. Charlie was already working as a songwriter and record producer at the time. He passed away at age 58 in 1998. Inez began working as a solo singer prior to the breakup and continued to make recordings in the 1970s. She survives her brother at age 79.
