"I Hear You Knocking" (1970) - Dave Edmunds
On this day in 1970, Welsh musician Dave Edmunds' cover of "I Hear You Knocking" reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It made it to #4 in the US in 1971 and placed in the top 10 in several other countries.
Edmunds' version is a cover, as previously mentioned. It was originally performed by singer-guitarist Smiley Lewis, whose recording was an R&B hit in 1955. Many other artists, including Fats Domino, have also recorded it.
Both Lewis and Domino, along with Chuck Berry and Huey Smith, were given a shout-out by Edmunds during the instrumental break of his version, which I think is pretty cool.
