Song was given to them by David Bowie because he liked the band, and wanted them to stay together (rumor was the band was about to break up).
The first song he offered them was “Suffragette City”, but they turned that one down so Bowie recorded it himself.
A friend of my mother’s had met Ian Hunter and his wife at a charity event, and she told me they were really nice. She asked if I could play one of his songs for her, so I played this one (which he wrote)....and she was impressed.
