"Nymphes des bois", also known as "La Déploration de Johannes Ockeghem", is a lament composed by the great Josquin des Prez to commemorate the death of his predecessor Johannes Ockeghem. Here it's performed by the Chanteurs de Saint-Eustache under the direction of Emile Martin in 1957.
A famous reviewer once questioned the accepting calm with which death was treated; the sobriety of mourning; the optimism for a better life in the afterlife that indeed still contrasts sharply with the difficult living conditions of the late fifteenth century. This five-minute chant, however, overshadows everything, for so sublime are the melodies, so refined and flowing are the harmonic and rhythmic movements. Father Martin was once again one of those rare pioneers in rediscovering the Franco-Flemish school of polyphony
