Was grunge the last time rock music was in the spotlight?

I'm not someone who says "rock is dead" but it's not in the spotlight like it was before. I know there are still some good artists but it seems like after grunge rock music took a backseat.

Indie and Britpop were the last two genres to take the music scene by storm here in the UK. Since then it's been bland and boring, with everyone sounding the same, no recognisable image or subculture to speak of.
We have boring, generic singers such as Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Lewis Capaldi whining and warbling their way through nursery rhymes while trying to sound Irish, it hurts me ears.
It's no wonder proper bands are reforming and touring again, it might give younger people some encouragement to form proper bands again.
