I Love Queen

I’m a 50’s kid and rock-n-roll already was on the scene so when I was old enough to grab my sister’s 45’s and her record player I used to listen to all her records. I liked what I heard and over time I developed my own musical tastes and bought my share of 45’s and played them on various record players.

I was never into rock bands, you know that loud stuff where to me the singers were shouting not singing. I enjoyed the 70’s music the best followed by the 60’s and the 80’s and my mom made sure she exposed my ear to classical music which I love to this day and of course I enjoy jazz and many other forms of music.

But rock music. No; until I was told of the movie Bohemian Rapsody about Queen and Freddie Mercury who when they were in their prime and he was alive I never cared for. Yeah I liked some of their stuff but I wouldn’t miss them if they weren’t there.

I watched the movie and was mesmerized. I learned of one of the greatest performers of all time. I listened to the music and when the movie was over I knew my life as I knew it would be changed in a small very special way. I read everything I could get my hands on and listened to their music.

Well today I found myself humming Bohemian Rapsody searching out the lyrics on YouTube and just listening to Queen sing it and even found someone on YouTube playing the tune on a piano. I was hooked again and I knew the song was in my bones, my heart and my soul. The song, Freddie and Queen all took their rightful place inside of me.

I guess they were meant to be there. I didn’t know that then but I know that now. Just took me some time to make some room for them and invite them in.

Now in keeping with my new found appreciation of rock music I might seek out other tunes that might find a place inside of me too.

Actually it was Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, then A Night At The Opera (w/Bohemian).

As you get into their catalogue you start to see how versatile they were and what was influencing them at the time. E.g. Brian May sounds very McCartneyish on "'39"; Roger Taylor sounds like he's paying homage to Roger Daltrey on "Loser In the End"; "Don't Stop Me Now" has a definite Elton John vibe. So not only is is Queen's catalogue excellent in its own right, you can learn a lot about the evolution of rock music (that doesn't suck) by listening to it.

@SagePoet Another milestone in real rock music you might check out is Who's Next (1971) from the Who...totally solid album from start to finish.

@SagePoet as a teaser here's a guy I never heard of doing an amazingly accurate solo piano rendition of "Baba O'Riley". https://youtu.be/_PVlMTCG-BI

I enjoyed Queen 1 and 2 thoroughly. Bohemian Rhapsody was their third and that was when their popularity shot to the roof.
