Top 40 Metal Albums

I had to urge to make this, I haven't thought about my faves in a while. Order's pretty rough but generally representative of my tastes. I'd love to talk to some fellow metalheads on here!

Hey I see love for Opeth in this list....made me excited even if they didn't crack your Top 20.

@Benjago The competition was fierce!! Still, the riffs are insane, Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals are killer, and the whole atmosphere is just pure progressive brilliance. Bleak is probably my fave off that album.

@NiatheDeerHunter It's one of my favorite albums as well. Along with Still Life. I'd say Face of Melinda is probably my favorite song from that album. Not the heaviest but such an amazing sound.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago Still Life would definitely make a top 75. Might need a whole separate list for just Opeth albums to rank all their incredible work!

@NiatheDeerHunter How about a list for prog metal 😌 Do you listen to any power metal? Didn't see much of any of that making your Top 40.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago A prog metal list does sound pretty fun to make! I find most power metal to be pretty cheesy honestly, though Blind Guardian and Nightwish have some pretty good songs. It can be okay in the right mood. But I definitely lean the most towards harsh death/prog stuff mainly.
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Haha, yes it can be pretty cheesy sometimes, a lot of the songs thrive on their melodic hooks. I do love the genre though, some of my favorite bands come from it. Nightwish, Helloween, Beast in Black, Stratovarius.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago It's funny because I'm actually pretty nerdy with fantasy stuff but the music just doesn't do it for me! I don't think I've ever heard any Beast in Black though.
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Nothing wrong with that...I won't ask the fantasy nerd community to bring shame upon you...there are bands in the same genre that don't sit well with me either. Like Epica....just not a big fan. Beast in Black is a spinoff off the band Battle Beast (you might not have heard of them either). I think the spinoff is an upgrade. If you want to try them out sometime give it a listen, one of my favs.

@Benjago Interesting. It's like synthwave mixed with metal. Definitely don't hate it but it feels limp in some spots. Needs a bit more aggression.
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Yes they go for a bit of an Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time sort of vibe. Definitely wouldn't describe this as an aggressive band. That's one of their slower songs but I'm sure even their more up tempo songs would still be a little tame for your taste.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago Well I could definitely see it suiting a fantasy / D&D role-play kind of night anyway!
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Haha, yes it certainly could. They have a song called Die By the Blade that would be perfect for D&D night.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago I'll check it out, why not

@NiatheDeerHunter You're going to think the first 30 seconds are from an 80's movie montage....

@Benjago XD OMG that was so accurate. I dig this one though. Nice solo! Plus it looks like it's based on Berserk?
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Yes. The band as a whole is a Berserk reference lol.
NiatheDeerHunter · 26-30, F
@Benjago Oh shoot XD They get extra cool points from me then lol
Benjago · 41-45, M
@NiatheDeerHunter Fantasy nerds creating fantasy nerd music.
